What is a Slab Leak?

The majority of modern homes have concrete slab foundations, which consist of a layer of concrete poured or laid on top of soil or gravel. The home is then constructed on top of the slab. Any damage to the slab jeopardizes the entire house’s structural stability.

A slab leak occurs when your plumbing system seeps leaks underneath the concrete slab foundation. This can result in a variety of issues that will only worsen if the leak isn’t repaired. The foundation of your home can begin to crack, buckle and shift, causing more plumbing pipes to break.

You can use your water meter to determine whether or not there is a slab leak. After turning off all plumbing fixtures and appliances, watch on your water meter for 15 minutes. If your water meter registered water usage in that timeframe, it’s a good indication that you have an undetected leak.

Symptoms of a Slab Leak

Slab leaks are incredibly difficult to detect without the right equipment. It is important to be mindful of the symptoms of a slab leak. Some of the issues to watch out for are:

  •   You notice a reduction in water pressure
  •   A significant increase in your water bill
  •   The sound of running water under your floors
  •   Floorboards are buckling or warped
  •   Damp spots on your carpet or floor
  •   A musty smell of mold or mildew

Slab Leak Detection

Left unaddressed, a slab leak can cause serious damage to the foundation of your home. Professional sound detection equipment is the most effective instrument for detecting these sorts of water leaks.

Using headphones and a microphone, a highly-skilled plumber will be able to listen to the sound of water as it moves through the pipes. Once the leak or leaks are pinpointed, the underlying issue can be repaired, which may include repiping some of the pipes in your home.
